STORIA DI UNA BALLERINA
C'era una volta, in mezzo al bosco, una casa piccola e modesta, tuttavia molto confortevole, ornata, da un lato, da un gra-
zioso orticello e, dall'altro, da un variopinto giardino. Vi abitava una famigliola composta dal papà, dalla mamma e da due
figli: Veronica, la primogenita e Narciso.
Il padre faceva il boscaiolo, per cui rimaneva gran parte della giornata lontano da casa; la madre, una massaia, si occupava
dei lavori domestici, del piccolo orto, nel quale seminava vari tipi di gustose verdure ed inoltre del giardino, ricoperto di
fiori profumati.
Veronica aveva circa dieci anni, era una ragazzina minuta e molto bella, con lunghi boccoli castano chiari e grandi occhi
verdi; possedeva un carattere dolce e tenace nel medesimo tempo e aveva il portamento molto aggraziato. Il piccolo Nar-
ciso, un ragazzino di otto anni, era vispo come uno scoiattolo e furbo come una volpe.
Durante la stagione estiva, quando la scuola del paese chiudeva per le vacanze, era solito andare nel bosco in cerca di suo
padre, per guardarlo lavorare e fargli compagnia, pronto ad inseguire ogni animaletto che intravvedeva.
Al contrario, la giovinetta rimaneva a casa con la madre per aiutarla nelle faccende e, nel tempo libero, adorava fare lunghe
passeggiate fino al torrente, per immergere i piedi nell'acqua che scorreva tranquilla e perennemente fresca. Tornando a
casa, si soffermava a raccogliere i frutti del bosco con cui la sua mamma era solita preparare squisite torte.
Durante l'autunno, quando la scuola riapriva le sue porte, i due scolaretti si alzavano alle prime luci dell'alba, ancora prima
del sorgere del sole, in quanto la strada da percorrere a piedi era molto lunga; portavano appresso un cestino con il pranzo,
dato che non sarebbero tornati a casa per tempo.
Quando arrivava la stagione invernale e, con essa, la neve, le loro gambe sprofondavano dentro il suo manto ad ogni passo,
tanto era alto; camminando a fatica, si prendevano per mano per farsi coraggio a vicenda dal momento che, a quell’ora del
mattino, era ancora buio e il bosco incuteva paura. Ogni giorno, la grande casa disabitata al limite del bosco li rassicurava,
poiché sapevano di essere quasi arrivati, mentre il cielo si andava rischiarando.
Un bel giorno, Veronica venne a sapere da una compagna di scuola che qualcuno era venuto ad abitare in quella casa soli-
taria. Da quel momento e ogni giorno di più, la curiosità spingeva i due fratellini ad avvicinarsi alla grande dimora, durante
il tragitto per tornare a casa.
Capitò che si avvicinassero al cancello chiuso, da dove osservarono una vecchia signora che stava passeggiando sul vialetto
in mezzo al giardino, ancora addormentato sotto la neve. Appariva di bell’aspetto, molto esile, con i capelli candidi raccolti
in un delizioso chignon. Era vestita in modo sobrio ed elegante.
Giunse il giorno che la signora si accorse della presenza dei due bambini e, cortesemente, li invitò a entrare per bere un tè
caldo, accompagnato da qualche biscotto. Non se lo fecero ripetere due volte e accettarono con entusiasmo.
La casa apparve strabiliante ai loro occhi, con i pavimenti lucidi come specchi e ricca di oggetti favolosi. Bevendo, man-
giando e chiacchierando allegramente il tempo volò e dovettero scappare a casa, ma non vedevano l’ora di tornarci.
Veronica nutriva un sogno segreto: quello di diventare una famosa ballerina, pur sapendo di non essere in grado di realiz-
zarlo, poiché la sua famiglia non aveva le possibilità di farle studiare danza.
Fu con grande stupore che apprese dalla sua nuova amica che, quando era giovane, era stata la più grande ballerina del
mondo. Non poteva credere alle proprie orecchie! Pertanto si confidò con lei.
Un giorno, durante una delle ormai abituali visite, ebbe modo di curiosare fra i vecchi abiti di scena della donna: bellissimi
vestiti e tutù colorati di tulle, di raso, fiocchi, nastri a volontà, scarpette a punta bianche, rosa, rosse, nere. Tutta questa
meraviglia era contenuta in un vecchio e capiente baule nel solaio. La sua cara amica la esortò a scegliere quello che più le
piaceva ma, via via che estraeva vestiti, il baule risultava essere sempre più profondo.
Ad un certo punto, sporgendosi troppo vicina al bordo, vi scivolò dentro e seppure inizialmente fosse terrorizzata dall’i-
dea di sbattere la testa sul fondo, in seguito lo spavento maggiore fu quello di non trovarlo affatto: si trovò a roteare vor-
ticosamente dentro una spirale, fino a quando non toccò il suolo. In quale mondo irreale era capitata?
S’incamminò lungo un viale alberato, illuminato da alti lampioni allineati. Lateralmente si ergeva un meraviglioso teatro
scintillante di luci; vide una moltitudine di persone in abiti da sera che si accingeva a salire la maestosa scalinata che con-
duceva all’ingresso principale, dove appariva un grande manifesto che annunciava lo spettacolo di danza classica. Proseguì
e vide un imponente e austero edificio con un’insegna luminosa: “Accademia della Danza”.
Entrò come fosse in trance e salì una delle due scale in marmo che si congiungevano al piano superiore. Le note di un
pianoforte le arrivavano sempre più distintamente; seguì la musica e si ritrovò in una sala dove molte bambine, apparen-
temente della sua età, si esercitavano alla sbarra, sotto la guida dell’insegnante dall’aria alquanto rigorosa.
Con timore la vide procedere verso di lei, tuttavia, contrariamente a quanto si aspettava, le sorrise come se la conoscesse.
<Ti stavo aspettando,> le disse, dopodiché le diede un abito bianco di tulle e un paio di scarpette di raso rosa da indossare.
Immersa nella magia di quel luogo incantato, danzò a lungo e apprese tutti i passi della danza classica con una facilità dav-
vero sorprendente: “Plié... Grand plié... Attitude... Developpé... Cambré... Echappé... Arabesque...
Chissà quanto tempo era passato! All’improvviso fu presa dal timore che il suo fratellino, non vedendola scendere dal sola-
io, fosse corso a casa ad avvertire mamma e papà della sua scomparsa. Doveva assolutamente trovare il modo di ritornare
nel suo mondo. Salutò la Direttrice e le giovani allieve e, correndo, percorse la strada a ritroso, giungendo fino al punto
dov’era sbucata.
Si rese conto soltanto allora di aver dimenticato, nella fretta, di riconsegnare il vestito di tulle che indossava e le scarpette
rosa che ancora calzava. Mentre rifletteva, una folata di vento improvvisa la sollevò e un turbine d’aria si impadronì del
suo corpo, trasportandolo vorticosamente.
Quando riaprì gli occhi, si trovava a terra vicino al vecchio baule, con le scarpette rosa fra le mani. Frastornata dai recenti
avvenimenti, scese le scale e si avviò nella sala, dove l’anziana amica era intenta in un’allegra conversazione con Narciso
che stava gustando dei biscotti.
Nel vederla, le si avvicinò sorridendo, consapevole di quello che le era accaduto; poi la rassicurò, spiegandole che, nel
luogo da dove era appena arrivata, non esisteva il tempo, pertanto non erano trascorsi che pochi minuti dalla sua assenza.
Il suo sguardo si soffermò sulle scarpette di raso rosa nelle mani di Veronica e, avvicinandosi a una scatola di legno lucido,
ne trasse un paio identico. Aveva ereditato quel baule magico da una grande ballerina, la quale aveva voluto concederle la
possibilità di vivere la sua stessa esperienza, quando era ancora una bambina.
Trascorse diverso tempo e Veronica, ancora un’adolescente, era divenuta la migliore danzatrice della sua epoca.
Nel frattempo, la sua cara amica era passata a miglior vita, lasciandole in eredità la sua bella casa e il prodigioso baule che,
in futuro, sarebbe stato pronto ad accogliere la visita di un’altra aspirante ballerina.

STORY OF A BALLERINA
Once upon a time, in the middle of the woods, t he re
was a house small and modest and all the same really
comfortable, laced on a side with a neat small vege- table
garden and, on the other, with a colorful garden. A family
lived there, made of the father, the mother and t w o
kids: Veronica, the first born, and Narcissus.
The father was a woodsman and spent most of his day
away from home; the mother, a housewife, han- dled
domestic activities, both gardens, where she sowed several
kinds of tasty vegetables, and took care of the per- fumed
flowers.
Veronica was about ten years old, she was petite and very beautiful, with long light brown curls and big green eyes; she had a sweet and
at the same time tenacious temper, and a really graceful posture. Little Narcissus, a boy of eight, was as lively as a squirrel and smart
like a fox.
During the summer, when the village school was closed for vacation time, he used to go into the woods looking for his father, to watch
him work and keep him company, ready to chase every little animal he glimpsed.
On the contrary, the girl stayed home with her mother to help her with the household chores and, in her spare time, she loved to take
long walks to the creek, where she immersed her feet in the water that ran quiet and perpetually crisp. On her way home, she usually
stopped to collect the fruits of the forest that her mother used to bake delicious cakes.
During the autumn, when the school opened its doors, the two kids had to wake up at dawn, even before the sunrise, because the street
they had to walk was really long; they brought with them a basket with lunch, since they wouldn’t be back home in time to eat there.
When winter came, and with it snow as well, their legs were sinking into its mantle every step they took, for how high it was; they could
barely walk and they took each other hand to give the other some courage because, at such an early hour, it was still dark and the wood
was scary. Every day, the big empty house at the edge of the forest reassured them, since they knew they had almost arrived, while
the sky started to brighten.
One fine day, Veronica came to know from a school friend that someone went to live in that lonely hose. From that moment and a little
more every day, curiosity was drawing the two siblings to take a step closer to the big residence, during their trip back home.
They came to the point that they approached the closed gate, from where they observed an old lady strolling on the driveway at the
center of the garden, still sleepy under the cover of snow. She seemed
fine looking, really fragile, with the pure white hair gathered in a charming chignon. She was dressed in a sober and elegant way.
Then came the day when the lady noticed the two children, and politely invited them to enter and have a warm tea and a few cookies.
She did not have to ask them twice, because they enthusiastically accepted the first.
The house seemed amazing to their eyes, with the floors as shiny as mirrors and rich in the most fabulous objects. As they were drin-
king, eating and chatting cheerfully, time passed in an instant and they had to run home, but they couldn’t wait to go back there.
Veronica harbored a secret dream: she dreamt of becoming a famous dancer, although she knew she could not actually fulfill it, because
her family did not have the necessary means to let her study ballet.
It was with amazement that she learned from her new friend that, when she was young, she had been the greatest ballerina in the world.
She could not believe it! Therefore she confided her secret to her.
One day, during one of their usual visits, she had a chance to browse through the old stage robes of the woman: the most beautiful
dresses and colorful tutus made of tulle and satin, and ribbons and laces a go-go, white, pink, red and black ballet slippers. All those
wonders were collected inside an old and spacious trunk that was kept in the attic. Her dear friend encouraged her to choose whatever
she liked best, but, as she kept on pulling the dresses out, the chest seemed to become deeper and deeper.
At some point, leaning too close to the edge, she slipped inside the trunk and, although at first she feared she was going to hit her head
against the bottom, soon the dread started to be more about not finding it at all. She was whirling round and round in a spiral, until
she reached the ground. What surreal world had she ended up in?
She took a step along a tree-lined street, lit by a row of tall lampposts. At the side she could see a magnificent theatre sparkling with
lights; she saw a multitude of people wearing evening clothes, who were about to climb the majestic stairs leading to the main entran-
ce, where a big poster announced a ballet performance. She went forward and saw an imposing and stern building with a neon sign:
“Dance Academy”.
She entered as if she were in a trance, and went up one of the two marble stairs that connected at first floor. The notes of a piano
arrived distinctively to her ears; she followed the music and arrived to a room where many children, apparently her age, were practicing
at the bar under the direction of a teacher with a quite strict attitude.
With dread she saw her walk to her, but on the contrary to what she was expecting, the woman smiled at her as if she knew her.
<I was waiting for you,> she said, before handing her a white dress made of tulle, together with a pair of slippers of pink satin she
had to wear.
Absorbed in the magic of that enchanted place, she danced at length and learned all the ballet steps with surprising ease . “Plié…grand
plié…attitude…développé…cambré…échappé… arabesque…”
Who knows how long she stayed there! Suddenly she feared that her brother, not seeing her descending from the attic, had run home
to warn mum and dad of her disappearance. She had to find a way to go back to her world. She said goodbye to the Directress and the
young pupils, and she ran her way backwards until she arrived to the spot where she had popped out.
Only then she realized she had forgotten, being in such a hurry, to give back the little tulle dress she was wearing and the pink ballet
slippers she still had at her feet. While she was thinking about that, a sudden gust of wind lifted her up and a whirl of air took over her
body, carrying her away in a vortex.
When she opened her eyes, she was on the ground, next to the old trunk, with the pink slippers in her hands. Dazed by the recent
events, she went down the stairs and into the hall, where her old friend was busy talking cheerfully to Narcissus, who was savoring the
cookies.
When she saw her, she went to her with a smile on her face, aware of what had happened to her; then the woman reassured the girl,
explaining that in the place where she had been there was no such thing as time, so in her absence only a few minutes had passed.
The lady’s gaze stopped at the pink satin slippers in Veronica’s hands and, going to a box made of shiny wood, she took out an identical
pair. She had inherited that magic chest from a great dancer, who had wanted to give her the chance to live the same experience when
she was just a child herself.
Time passed and Veronica, still a teenager, had become the best ballerina of her time.
Meanwhile, her dear friend had died, leaving her in heritage her beautiful house and the prodigious trunk that, in the future, would have
been ready to welcome the visit of another aspiring dancer.
